At The Hills Veterinary Clinic, we believe early diagnosis and timely treatment can make all the difference. Yoshy’s case is a strong example of how quick veterinary care can save a pet’s life.

Patient Details

Yoshy is a 1 year and 6-month-old male Scottish Straight cat.

He was brought to our clinic after his owner noticed that he had stopped eating and drinking for two days. He was hiding, inactive, and not behaving normally.

Loss of appetite and reduced movement in cats should never be ignored.

Initial Symptoms

Yoshy presented with:

  • Not eating
  • Not drinking
  • Hiding behavior
  • Weakness

On physical examination, he appeared quiet but responsive. His abdomen felt gassy, and further diagnostics were immediately recommended.

Diagnostic Findings

Our team performed:

  • Blood tests (CBC & Chemistry)
  • X-ray imaging
  • In-house diagnostic screening

The X-ray revealed a foreign body in the intestine.

Blood work showed signs of infection.

The diagnosis: Colonic foreign body (Orbeez bead)

Foreign body ingestion is common in young cats, especially when small toys or decorative items are accessible at home.

Emergency Surgery

Yoshy was prepared for immediate surgery.

Under general anesthesia, our surgical team carefully explored the abdominal cavity. A tough, spherical foreign body (Orbeez) was identified in the colon.

A colotomy procedure was performed, and the foreign object was successfully removed intact.

The abdomen was thoroughly flushed, and the incision was carefully closed in layers using absorbable sutures.

Yoshy recovered smoothly from anesthesia.

Post-Operative Care

After surgery, Yoshy received:

  • Intravenous fluids
  • Antibiotics
  • Pain management
  • Close monitoring

He responded well and recovered without complications.

At his follow-up check, the incision site was healing properly with no discharge.

The Importance of Early Intervention

If Yoshy’s owner had waited longer, the blockage could have led to:

  • Intestinal rupture
  • Severe infection
  • Septic shock
  • Life-threatening complications

Because he was brought in early, the outcome was positive.

What Pet Owners Should Watch For

If your cat shows:

  • Sudden loss of appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Hiding behavior
  • Lethargy
  • Straining to defecate
  • Abdominal discomfort

Seek veterinary attention immediately.

Young cats are especially curious and may swallow small objects like:

  • Orbeez beads
  • Rubber pieces
  • String
  • Small toys
  • Decorative items

Prevention is always better than emergency surgery.

Yoshy Today

After surgery and proper recovery care, Yoshy returned for his annual vaccination and was assessed as healthy and active.

This case reminds us how important it is to act quickly when something feels wrong.
